PROFILE
I have always been a very visually oriented person and after training as a draftsman with no possibility for creativity I changed directions and began drawing and painting. I had briefly studied photography in high school and decided to incorporate this media into my repertoire, with the result that after only a few years it had begun to dominate as my preferred medium. By the time of my first solo exhibition in 1989 half of the work was photography and five years later the next show was all photographs. Initially emphasizing landscapes and nature, my interests in subject matter have evolved and changed over the years with the juxtaposition of man and nature coming more to the fore - particularly expressed in the category I call "LifeBytes".
A photograph is a depiction
of a real subject but it is highly subjective in its implementation.
For me then, evoking the mood or feeling of a location and my interaction
with it is an important aspect of a successful photograph. I’m not
sure why I have the urge to create images though, just that I like to create
something aesthetically pleasing to myself (and hopefully others) and photography
fills the role nicely while appeasing my logical side with the technical
and equipment aspects of the craft.
I taught myself the basics of photography in the mid 1980’s and have been exploring and building on the basics ever since. In 2000 I moved from Perth, Western Australia to Cairns in tropical north Queensland and soon adapted to digital photography with its increased control and potential for expression. My photographs are a point of view both literally and figuratively and I like to gain as wide a perspective as is possible (figuratively but not always literally!) hence my love of travel and the photographic opportunities that arise from it. I would also like to acknowledge the unflagging enthusiasm and support of my wife Sunny and for putting up with my photographic zeal.
